The First Signs Of Rising Damp
The first signs of Rising Damp are bubbling paint, staining and crumbling plaster, usually at the base of a wall. Rising damp is caused by the damp-proof course being omitted, aged, incorrectly positioned or bridged. Moisture from the ground will then rise up the wall by capillary action and evaporate from the surface, leaving behind salts on the surface, if left untreated, mould, rot and even structural deterioration could occur.
What Causes Rising Damp?
Damp in a wall can often be misdiagnosed as Rising Damp, and in many cases the damp is being caused by a leak, water penetration from the external surface of the wall or salt damp. At DAMPSTAR, our highly trained surveyors have years of experience, we can determine where the damp is originating and how best to resolve the problem.

Repairing Your Home
When a wall pulls ground water up into your home, it brings naturally occurring salts from the soil into the plaster. Once these salts have contaminated the plaster in your home, it must be removed as part of the repair process. Removing the plaster back to the brick also gives us the opportunity to inject a new damp course into the wall at the correct location.
The new damp course is introduced by injecting a cream into the mortar line at the correct height, this cream spreads through the mortar and forms an impervious barrier against moisture.
The walls are then rendered and replastered, this new render has a salt inhibitor chemical which neutralises any remaining salts from the brickwork. This system comes with a Ten-Year Guarantee, which has been an industry standard for many decades.
This new render and plaster finish should be allowed to dry for around 4 to 6 weeks before painting. Once the wall is ready to paint, it is highly advisable to use a breathable undercoat and paint, as this will allow the wall to continue expelling any remaining moisture.
